ESEM Erasmus Mundus Master’s students selected

The ESEM Erasmus Mundus Master’s course, called CEMACUBE (Common European MAster’s CoUrse in Biomedical Engineering) is in full preparation. The coordinators of the 6 participating universities (the Universities of Groningen (The Netherlands), Aachen (Germany), Dublin (Ireland), Ghent, Brussels (Belgium), Prague (Czech Republic)) have met in Prague at the end of January to select the non-EU-students.

We received 178 complete application packages. They were first assessed by the international office of the University of Groningen. This office performed a diploma check to see whether the level of the BSc obtained was sufficient for starting an MSc at the CEMACUBE partner universities. They also performed a check of the English proficiency test.

Next, all applications with a BSc level sufficient to start an MSc at the CEMACUBE partner universities were ranked based on their average grades obtained during the BSc. The top 50 applicants in this list were assessed by the University of Groningen. They created a modified ranking of these 50 applicants, based on motivation letters, educational background and references. The 35 highest ranked individuals were invited for an interview via Skype. They originated from all over the world, like Mexico, Indonesia, China, Turkey, and Russia. On one day all 35 candidates were interviewed by 5 groups. The best 12 were selected on their motivation, English, presentation skills and type of Bachelor. They will receive a full scholarship. The next 13 students were accepted for the Master’s, however, without scholarship.

ESEM summer school in Dublin

Like last July ESEM will organise in July 2010 again a summer school for engineering and medical undergraduate students from across Europe. They will design next generation medical devices at the Trinity Centre for BioEngineering. The summer school is financed by an Erasmus IP grant and organised by seven of the leading universities in biomedical engineering and medicine.

With different working cultures and educational backgrounds, the aim of the Summer School at Trinity College will be again to teach students how to work together efficiently by getting small groups designing new, novel medical devices targeting specific medical and clinical problems.

It will be a great opportunity for Bachelor medical and engineering students to live, learn and participate in an intense and rewarding academic environment for two weeks in Trinity College Dublin and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.

Ø       Thanks to a grant of the Erasmus IP programme, 75% of the travel costs will be refunded.      Students will be offered subsidised student accommodation.

Ø       Students will learn about teamwork with medical and technical students via collaborative projects.

Ø       Students participate in advanced lectures and discussions on key topics.

Ø       World renowned professors will be available throughout the two weeks to give informal advice and insight into the increasing importance of engineering in medicine and healthcare.

The summer school is open for students from:

¤        Trinity College Dublin,

¤        Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland

¤        University of Ulster

¤        University of Groningen

¤        University of Ghent

¤        University of Calabria

¤        Brno University of Technology

¤        Czech Technical University in Prague

¤        RWTH Aachen

Application deadline is 1 June; For further details contact: www.tcd.ie/bioengineering
